Our topic this week is Spring – Minibeasts
This week we have read:
- The Hungry Caterpillars Bug Hunt
- The Hungry Caterpillar
- Superworm
- A Nice Place
- The Ladybird Who Heard
Activities/provision this week:
- Minibeast tuff tray – The children played with pretend soil (brown moon sand), pretend minibeasts and scoopers.
- Butterfly painting – The children painted on one side of a butterfly and printed onto the other to make a mirror effect.
- Minibeast hunt – We learnt about different minibeasts and went on a hunt around the school to find some. The children took lists of minibeasts and ticked them off.
- Minibeast fine motor tray – The children played with pretend grass (green shredded paper), pretend minibeasts, wooden blocks and tweezers. They used the tweezers to pick up and move the minibeasts.
- Bug hotel small world play – The children played with the dolls house, wooden beehive, wooden logs, pretend grass and toy minibeasts.
- Minibeast café – The children pretended to make food with different toy minibeasts e.g. worms, ladybirds, beetles.
- Snail craft – The children decorated a ‘snails shell’ using tissue paper. They tried to make a circular pattern.
- Visit from the dentist – On Thursday we had a visit from the dentist! The children enjoyed playing different games where they learnt about their teeth and how to keep them clean.
Phonics: Voice Sounds
This term our phonics focus is voice sounds. The children have been learning how to distinguish between the differences in vocal sounds, including oral blending and segmenting. They have been exploring different mouth movements and how to make different sounds.
Nursery rhymes:
This term we will be learning the nursery rhymes:
- Row, Row, Row your Boat
- Five little men in a flying saucer
- 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive
- Incy Wincy Spider
- Humpty Dumpty
- Ten fat sausages
- Five little speckled frogs
- 10 green bottles
- Miss Polly had a dolly
- Ten in the bed
Maths: Shape
The children have been learning how to:
- Chooses items based on their shape which are appropriate for a specific purpose
- Recognise and identify 2D shapes
- Using shape related language e.g. flat, round
- Show an awareness of shape similarities and differences between objects
