This week the children in Codden class have learnt about how people celebrate the Lunar New Year.  They explored Chinese writing, practised their pincer grip by pinching out lucky pennies from red rice, the learnt how to fold paper accurately to make a dragon and worked hard to cut accurately to make a Chinese lantern.  They learnt about why certain symbols, stories, colours and traditions are important during this celebration.
In Maths the children have continued to explore repeating patterns, this week they created circular patterns, they identified, extended and created their own  AB, ABC, ABB circular patterns on paper plates.
13.02.26 - Jumping Higher and Further!
The children worked together independently and made an obstacle course, so much learning took place!  They challenged each other to jump higher and further, they managed risk by putting crates on top of each other and climbed up, they worked together to share ideas, helped and encouraged each other to 'try again', they adapted and improved their obstacle course by adding extra 'challenges' and had such a fun time together!
06.02.26 - The Gingerbread Man
This week the children have had great fun acting out the story of the Gingerbread Man.  They thought carefully about the characters and the sequence of the story.
The children practised the letter formation of the one armed robot letters 'r n m h p' by writing them in trays of flour, they tried hard to start and finish each letter in the correct place.
Everyone had great fun investigating what happened when the Gingerbread man fell into different liquids 'water, lemonade, vinegar, milk, lemonade and oil', they made great predications of what they thought might happen and amazing observations of what they saw happening.
The children practised their cutting skills by creating their own gingerbread man.  They focussed on cutting accurately, curved lines using scissors and added detail by sticking on pom poms, sequins, stickers and shapes.
The children wrote speech bubbles for the characters of the Old Woman, the Fox and the Gingerbread Man, the children said the sentence that they wanted to write,  sounded out carefully, started and finished their letters in the correct place and some even remembered to leave a space between each word.
30.01.26 - Little Red Riding Hood
The children have enjoyed acting out the story of Little Red Riding Hood in roleplay, they used words and phrases from the story and told it in sequence.
The children thought about how they could describe character of the wolf, they used words such as fierce, mean, scary, hungry, vicious, terrifying, sharp teeth, pointy claws and wrote WANTED posters to warn other people about him using the letters, sounds and words that they have learnt.
In Maths the children explored repeating patterns, they learnt to identify, extend and create repeating AB and ABC patterns.
The children have explored different ways of attaching materials together in the making area such as masking tape, split pins, staples and glue and have made flowers and baskets for Granny using their skills.
Winter Trees - 16.01.26
This week we continued to learn about what happens in Winter.  We found out that some bird migrate to warmer countries and that some birds find it difficult to find food because there are less insects and berries to eat.  We decided to make some bird feeders to feed the birds in our garden.  We used cutters to cut out toast shapes, knives to spread peanut butter onto the toast and then pressed them into bird seed.   We threaded Cheerios onto pipe cleaners and practiced our pincer grip which will help us with our writing.  We hope that the birds enjoy our tasty treats!
In maths we have been learning to calculate pairs of numbers that equal 10, we have used tens frames, part part whole, numcion, counters, cubes, and poppets to help us.  Some children challenged themselves to record their number sentences on whiteboards using the symbols + =.
09.01.26 - Winter
The children were very excited to return to school after the Christmas break to a very frosty and icy garden.  They explored the ice, collected the ice and even tried to make their own ice by leaving our water to freeze over night.
The children created icy collages and used the words hail, ice, frost, freezing, snow when talking about their creations.
We talked about how the trees had changed since Autumn and learnt about the words evergreen and deciduous. The children did some really careful observational drawings of trees in the forest school area.  Everyone tried to include the different parts of the tree in their drawing:  roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves.
