This week we have based our learning about Spring on the book ‘That’s My Flower’.   We have …

  • Looked at our cress seeds and talked about how they have changed since we planted them.
  • Explored 2D shapes, we have looked for them in the environment around us, investigated which shapes can be made using lolly sticks and match sticks and played shape bingo.
  • Written Mothers Day Cards and thought about why our Mummy’s are special to us.
  • Made careful observational drawings and paintings of Spring Flowers.
  • We have learnt all of the Phase 3 sounds now.  We will spend time going over them all and develop our confidence at reading and writing CVC words containing them.  This week we have recapped ai, ee, igh, oa.
  • Enjoyed a fun taster session of Tennis run by Tarka Tennis.

Home Learning - Week 22

This week we have continued our learning based on the story Jack and the Beanstalk.   We have …

  • Investigated what plants need to help them grow.  We placed white carnations in coloured water and are waiting to see what happens to them.
  • Designed our own magical bean packets and found ways of attaching them so that the beans do not fall out.
  • Used the computer to draw a picture of our own ‘dream’ magical beanstalk and learnt how to change the colour and size of the paint brush.
  • Learnt to share and group objects and investigated which numbers can be halved equally.
  • Thought of words to describe the giant and have written a Wanted Poster.
  • Created flower collages using a variety of materials such as buttons, coloured paper, cake cases, sequins etc.
  • We have learnt the last Phase 3 sounds this week, some of them were trigraphs – air, ear, ure, er.

This week our learning has been based around the story Jack and the Beanstalk. 

  • We retold and retold the story in sequence using small world and role play.
  • Made mini books to retell the beginning, middle and end of the story.
  • Planted Giant Head Cress, we can’t wait to watch the cress grow
  • Continued to learn about doubles using numicon, objects, dominoes and dice.
  • We have learnt the last Phase 3 sounds this week, some of them were trigraphs – air, ear, ure, er.
  • Practised our cutting skills by creating our own magical beanstalks.
  • Had great fun dressing up for world book day and talking about which books are special to us and why.

Welcome back, we hope that everyone had a lovely half term beak, we have loved hearing about what everyone got up to during news time this week!  This week we have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and have read the  story ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’.  

 

  • We enjoyed tasting pancakes with different toppings
  • Wrote simple instructions showing how to make a pancake
  • Created obstacle courses outside and travelled over them balancing a pancake in a pan!
  • Learnt about doubles, identified double dominoes and printed double pictures.
  • We have recapped all of the sounds that we have learnt this term and practised reading and writing cvc words using them.
  • Practised our cutting skills by making beautiful daffodil collages.
  • Thought about how to keep ourselves safe online as part of internet safety week.  We enjoyed watching the Smartie the Penguin Videos.

We can hardly believe the children have now completed half of their Reception Year with us!  This week we have continued our learning around the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ and have explored the theme of Connections for Children’s Mental Health Week.

  • We have told our own stories based on Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car by changing the character and vehicle.
  • Sounded out and have written a simple sentence to retell part of our story.
  • Created our own vehicles with axels and moving wheels out of junk materials.
  • Recognised, extended and created ABB and ABBC patterns using counters, cubes and shapes.
  • We have learnt the sounds ur, oi, ow or and have practised reading and writing words using these sounds.
  • Thought about how we connect with those around us for Children’s Mental Health Week.  How are we connected to the people around us?  How do we connect with people who are far away or no longer with us?
  • Enjoyed listening/watching Sapphira’s Grandad play the piano for us!  Thank you so much for entertaining us!

This week we have started learning about Rockets and Space

  • Thought about what it might be to live in space and found out how astronauts eat, sleep, and wash in space.
  • We have written a postcard home from Baby Bear telling his mum what it was like in space.  We tried hard to remember to leave spaces between each word.
  • Learnt about subtraction and worked out how many aliens will be left on a planet if some of them leave.  We used words such as subtract, take away, less, equals.
  • We have learnt the sounds ai, ee, igh and have practised reading and writing words using these sounds.
  • Found out about the first person who landed on the moon.

This week we have started learning about Rockets and Space

  • We have read the story of Whatever Next.  We have acted out the story and remembered it in sequence.  
  • We have written a list of everything that we think we would need to take on a space adventure, sounding out carefully and using the sounds that we have learnt.   
  • We have investigated how to make rockets and explored how we can get them to travel faster and further.
  • Compared objects to find out which was the longest and shortest and explored measuring using cubes.
  • We have learnt the sounds sh, ch, th, ng and have practised reading and writing words using these sounds.
  • Made food to feed the bird and watched birds in our EYFS Garden as part of the RSPB Birdwatch.
  • Learnt about how to look after our teeth and keep them clean and healthy with Kim from Torrington Dental Practice.

This week we have continued with our Learning About Little Red Riding Hood

This week we have…

  • Explored ways of turning junk materials into a basket for Little Red Riding Hood to carry her shopping to Grandmas’ House.  We talked about size, shape and ways of attaching the materials.
  • Thought of words to describe the wolf and have written a WANTED poster to try and catch him.
  • Listened to and followed instructions for how to make bird feeders.
  • Learnt the sounds z zz qu, y and learnt how to read and write CVC words using these sounds.
  • Compared numbers using words such as bigger than, smaller than greater than, less than and investigated doubling and halving.
  • Drawn a story map and used a programmable Beebot to travel through the journey using words such as forwards, backwards, turn, left, right, sideways.

This week we have started the term with a traditional take ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, we have focussed on journeys.

This week we have…

  • Talked about what we did during the Christmas Holidays and have written a sentence using the sounds that we know.
  • Learnt the sounds j v w x and learnt how to read and write CVC words using these sounds.
  • Listened to the story Little Red Riding Hood, we have acted out the story in sequence using words and phrases from the story using role play and small world.
  • Talked about how we travel to school and make a class pictogram to find out what is the most common way of travelling, car, walking, taxi or bike?
  • Looked carefully at the character of the wolf and have drawn pictures of it using charcoal.  We found that we could make lots of different types of marks.
