Lundy Spring term 2022

8/4/22

What a great week to end a term!  I am so proud of all the children this term for working hard and making great progress.

The children have written some amazing fairy tales this week and tried hard to create atmosphere using descriptive devices.

Maths has been lots of revision for the Y6 children and they have remained focused, despite being very tired.

The Y5’s have been busy learning to ride their bikes on the road and have behaved superbly.  Also they have been learning to be sports leaders – Mrs Farr was very complementary about their listening skills and behaviour.

In maths we have been developing our understanding of fractions and percentages.

We have been planning our fairy tale stories and learning about the features of summary sentences.

In science we have learnt about reflections and how different mirrors affect the image that we see.

In Geography we have be locating countries by their latitude and longitude positions, and developing our understanding of latitude and longitude.

25.03.22

In maths we have been solving problems involving shape and space.

We have been familiarising ourselves with key features of fairy tales – archaic language, expanded noun phrases, summarising sections, key elements.

In science we have been investigating carried out a shadow experiment and created our own tables to record results.  We have also been drawing conclusions, describing causal relationships and deciding how trustworthy our results are.

We have held a mini tournament in PE; all children were great sports and worked hard as a team.

11.03.22

In maths we have been learning about perimeter and area of shapes, and solving problems involving these.

The children have written some super story opening’s; they have had lots of learning about how to structure very complex sentences.  Next week they are going to apply these skills to a piece of independent writing.

We have been learning about databases and how they work in computing.

We have begun our final pieces of art work based on the work of Peter Thorpe – the children are really pleased with their work so far…

4/3/22

What a busy week we’ve had - enjoying books and focusing on our learning!

Book week has been fab! The children really enjoyed the book swap and it was great to see them reading to younger children earlier in the week; this is the first time this has happened for a while.  On Thursday we had a visit from a librarian who told us that there are lots and lots of new books in Barnstaple library, so please join if you’re not already a member – it’s completely free for children.

The children have started learning about different story openings.  They have been learning to create multi-clause sentences.

In art, the children have been learning to create movement in their art work.  Next week they will begin composing their final piece of work in which they will use all of the skills they have learnt.

Music has been learning to sample sounds using a computer app called Audacity.

17.02.22

I can’t believe it’s half term already – the children have been working so hard that the weeks are just flying by!

This week the Y6 children visited Petroc to take part in workshop activities about space, led by Y12 students.  The children behaved brilliantly and took part in the activities which included classifying different rocks, investigating meteorites and learning about the Space Race.  The children were very lucky to have observed and touched actual space rocks on loan from NASA.

In class, the children have completed their independent instructional texts.  I am so proud of the work they have produced; they really tried their best and used all of their writing skills.

Our art learning has given the children a new experience as they have had a go at painting with gouache – a thick paint similar to oils.

In science the children have created a movable model to show the orbits of Earth and the moon in relation to the sun.  They have used this to write explanations about why we have day and night.

11.02.22

This week we have embraced children’s mental health week by being very creative and talking about what mental health is.  The children have been very brave sharing how they sometimes feel, and together we have been thinking of strategies we can all use to be in the present to help push our worries to one side.  Please see the blog for photos of our ‘Growing Together’ hands.

All of the children have been so excited and fired up about their writing this week – it has been a pleasure to be in class with them.  They are in the process of producing some super independent instructional texts.

We have been practicing ordering food in French and have been using pastels and paints to develop our understanding of perspective and shading.

04.02.22

It has been lovely to see most of the class back this week. We have been busy writing our instructional texts about how to survive on Mars. The children have worked really hard and are proud of their finished pieces.

All the class took part in Forest School this week, and enjoyed making bread to have with some hot chocolate – perfect for a Winter’s day!

The Y5’s have created a scaled solar system model using toilet rolls, balls and their amazing maths skills!
We have also learnt some French and re-created space art in the style of Peter Thorpe.
28.01.22

We have had a little bit of a crazy week due to lots of illness spreading through the children.  Despite this, we have managed to complete lots of fun learning activities.

In English we have planned and started writing an instructional text about how to survive on Mars.  The children have really enjoyed finding out more about this planet.

Maths learning has been about scaling, ratio and proportion.  Some children scaled up a recipe to make gingerbread for the whole class!

We have carried out our meteor experiments to answer our own questions about the effects of size and height on craters.  We have begun creating a powerpoint to present our results.

14.01.22

We have had such a hard-working week – the children have been really focused!

In English we have started unpicking the key features of instructional texts: adverbials; modal verbs

In maths we have been developing division skills and starting to apply these to problem solving.

We have had lots of fun re-creating the Dr. Who theme, using instruments and our voices.

Our science learning has been finding out about the solar system and trying to remember some of the facts.

Happy New Year to you all!

It has been great to see the children this week.  They have made a great start to the term with their enthusiasm and focus.

We have begun a unit of instructional writing.  Our core text is about how to survive in the jungle and the children have had a go at writing their own instructions for this.

In maths we have begun to learn long multiplication methods building on our previous learning of the grid method.  Well done if you know your times tables as this has really helped you this week!

Our topic this term is about Space and Light.  We have made a start by thinking about what we already know…

21.01.22

In English we have been practicing writing instructions with as much detail as possible – using subordinating conjunctions, adverbials and relative clauses.

In maths we have been applying multiplication and division skills to solving 2 step word problems.  Also we have been finding out about cubed numbers.

The children have created some super fact files about planets and other space features.  They have also planned an investigation into meteors.

The children have completed some super story openings, creating back stories for well-known or imagined characters.

We have been learning about how search engines find information using

We have completed our space art  - see pictures on the class blog.

In science we have been investigating how light travels and trying to draw diagrams to show how light allows us to see objects behind us using a mirror.
