In English, we began a new sequence based on a poem called ‘The Sea Is...’ The children have enjoyed learning the poem and talking about their likes, dislikes, puzzles and patterns. In this sequence the children will write their own poem using metaphors and noun phrases.

We started our 12 days of Christmas and made a class advent calendar, as well as our class crafts. Tarka and Barum class have been busy practicing our songs for the Christmas celebration next Tuesday.

In Maths we have started a new unit on place value, firstly focusing on the teen numbers and understanding that all teen numbers are made up of 1 ten and some ones. On Friday we looked at how many different ways a two-digit number can be partitioned.

In Maths, we have investigated how many edges, faces and vertices are on various 3D shapes and have had fun making repeating patterns with 3D shapes.

To end our history learning, the children answered our question: Would you rather be a child in Bishops Tawton now or in the Victorian era? Most of the children said they would prefer to be a child in the present day, because they have nice warm homes, iPads, lots of toys and yummy food that Victorian children wouldn’t have had.

In Science, we started our topic ‘Animals including Humans’, we listened to the story ‘The Monkey Puzzle’ and have talked about how not all animal’s babies look like their mothers.

We discussed our upcoming trip to the theatre to see Stick Man on Monday. Please send your child in their school uniform for the day.

We have had a great week of learning in Barum class, it was lovely to see the children dressed up today to support Children in Need. Today we had an assembly with Tarka class learning about the charity and all the amazing things they do to support children.

 

In English, we have learnt some facts about hedgehogs and have written these facts in sentences using verbs in the present tense and the subordinating conjunction ‘when’.

 

In Maths we have continued our unit on geometric reasoning. We have been identifying the number of sides and vertices on 2D shapes, we have made 2D shapes on geo boards and have learnt how to draw accurate shapes using a ruler.

 

In ICT we started our unit on digital media. We explored which devices can take pictures and talked about the importance of asking people permission to take their photograph. We used the iPad’s to take pictures and then looked at our pictures and talked about which picture was our best and why.

We have had a super busy week in Barum class, full of fun learning!

We started the week with an amazing Victorian experience day. James from Past Presents taught us about the jobs Victorian children would have done followed by experiencing what a day in a Victorian school would have been like, then children had the opportunity play with the types of toys Victorian children would have had.

In English, we have learnt about writing verbs in the present tense and have practised writing sentences using the subordinating conjunction ‘when’.

In Maths we have started our new unit geometric reasoning. We have been checking our knowledge of identifying 2D and 3D shapes, we went on a 3D shape hunt around the classroom and will be using the data we collected to produce a tally chart.

We have had a lovely week back in Barum class, full of fun learning!

We have started our new text in English, Penguins by Emily bone. We will be learning to write a non-chronological report about an animal correct punctuation, present tense verbs and subordination ‘when’.

In Maths we have been learning to add three one-digit numbers, finding the inverse of calculations to check if they correct and finding number bonds to 100.

We have started learning about the Victorians in preparation for our Victorian day on Monday.

We have had a busy week in Barum class, full of fun learning!

The children loved making, tasting and evaluating their bread rolls.

In Maths we have been working on adding and subtracting tens and ones from two-digit numbers and noticing that the ones in the two-digit don’t change only the amount of tens change.

In Geography we have been learning about maps and how to use them, we went on a tour of the school following a blank plan of the school and labelled all the different rooms and areas on the school grounds. 

In PE we have been working on our balancing skills and have had great fun playing popping pirates.

In English this week the children have written their own story based on ‘The High Street’.

In Maths, we have started our new unit on addition and subtraction the children have been learning about fact families and related facts using part, part whole models and bar models.

In geography this week we have been learning about human and physical features and have sorted human and physical features that we can see in our school environment.

In IT we used the Beebots and the Beebot app and learnt how to program the bee so it could pollinate the flower.

Thank you for coming to see our Harvest singing on Wednesday afternoon. The children enjoyed sharing their songs with you.
 
Barum class have written a new version of ‘The Highstreet’ in English this week. Next week they will write the own version of the story by choosing their own shops, naming the owners using alliteration and making up a shopping list.
 
In Maths, we have finished our unit on place value and will start addition and subtraction next week.
 
In science this week, we started our topic of ‘Animals including Humans’ and classified animals according to what they eat.

Barum class enjoyed our trip to church on Tuesday to celebrate our Harvest Festival (even if the walk was a bit soggy). We talked about how and why we show respect in a church. The children really took this on board and behaved excellently. You can listen to the songs on our website and weather permitting on the playground on Wednesday 6th October at 2.45pm. 

In English this week, we have focussed on creating noun phrases and using commas in a list and had fun acting out different verbs.

In maths, we have been learning how to estimate numbers on a number line remembering the importance of plotting the middle number to help when arranging other numbers on the line. We have also been learning how to compare numbers using the less than greater than symbols.

In RE we have started our learning about Muslim people and their faith, we have made some moon and crescent mobiles to help us remember the symbol of the Islamic faith.

This week in English we started to learn and explore our class text The Highstreet. We have been learning how to write alliteration for different shop keepers and how to use a possessive apostrophe.

In maths, we have worked on deepening our understanding of place value of by partitioning tw0-digit numbers into how many tens and ones they have and have been practising counting forwards and backwards in tens from different numbers.

We’ve had another great week in Barum class. The highlight was celebrating Roald Dahl day on Thursday, sharing lots of his stories and thinking about his funny characters. We were so impressed with the effort that went into the outfits, thank you. 

The children enjoyed sharing their photos of the view from their window and writing a speech bubble about their picture. This week they have learnt about algorithms in ICT and had great fun following an algorithm to draw an image.

We’ve been counting forwards and backwards in tens in maths and have learnt how to represent a two-digit number on a place value chart and with base 10 equipment.

 

We have had a lovely week getting to know each other!
 
We have written about our summer holidays and have started our new English sequence based on the book ‘The High Street’ by Alice Melvin. In maths, we have been practising counting in 2’s and 5’s and have started to learn about place value and what two digit numbers are made up of (tens and ones). We have discussed our focus author Tom Percival and shared some of his stories.
 
We’ve also talked about having a growth mind-set and have discussed and agreed upon our class rules.
